Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman, was the third daughter of their family. Her father, a carnival barker, died at the age of a tiny girl, requiring her mother to support the family by being a waitress and cleaning woman. Ruth was born in a poor neighborhood of Boston Massachusetts where she attended the school. Following only two school years, Ruth left to pursue the acting career. It was not without problems. When she was offered a job in New York as a model for a detective magazine, she was unable to get work for stage. When she was employed as a hat-check girl in a nightclub, she resigned and went back to Boston. She was an usherette during the day and then was a part of the New England Repertory Company by night, which was her first permanent acting gig. She been accepted into Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she studied drama.
